Shakespeare Workshops with Mike Stack

Since the late 1990′s Mike Stack of Bard on the Beach Education program and other acting pursuits has led groups of 14-16 homelearners for a 4 week workshops whenever he can fit us into his busy schedule.  Once again the Vancouver Homelearners Shakespeare Troupe will be presenting their work on Friday evening June 18 at 7pm

Please come and join us for our presentation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and potluck afterwards.. its a great time to meet other homelearners and see whether this is something your child might want to try in the future.  But even if its not something your child wants to do please come to watch and eat with us afterwards.

The presentation and all the workshops are held at the Ukrainian Hall, 805 E. Pender, in Strathcona, East Vancouver..

On behalf of Mike, Melissa is collecting a list of possibly interested families who might like to participate in upcoming workshops.  The program runs like this:

A four week, three mornings 9:30-12:30 a week (Monday, Wed, Friday) workshop with a presentation (not a formal performance) on the last Friday in the evening.  For kids 8 to 17ish (he’s also considering an older group of just teens(14-19 ish)- so if you’re interested let us know).  A typical session is 1 hour of warm-up with acting games and 2 hours of learning a Shakespeare play by “playing it”.  Fun is always had by the participants but focus for three hours at a time, willingness to memorize lines and desire to be there is required.

So if you want your kids to be on the list announcing future workshops and to give Mike and idea of how many to offer over the next year or two please send:

Your name, your child/ children’s name and birth year, an email and phone contact.  If you have months are are more likely to work than others.. please add those too.

and send it to Melissa, at infomomster@gmail.com and she’ll compile and pass the list on to Mike.

Visual Table of Elements

A great  visual table of elements PDF from elements.wlonk.com

Starfall.com

Starfall.com is a great online resource for learning to read. Paris (3) loves the alphabet section! The letter T and B are his favourite. Cassius doesn’t visit this site anymore, but I know other seven years who are just beginning to read, that find it very useful. I love the simplicity of this site, and also that there is no advertising.

Stories in the “It’s fun to read” & “I’m reading” section include: Greek myths, Chinese Fables, Comics, Musicians, Poetry, Artists and Magic. These stories are interesting for their own sake, which always help with motivation. Kids can either read the stories themselves or hear the words by clicking on them.

Brain POP

Brain Pop is an online animated learning resourse. Cassius has learned about Science, Health, Technology, Math, Social Studies and English movies, plus much more. The humour really helps keep his interest. He loves it.

The only drawback is that it costs around $100 a year. But some parts of it are free, and you can take a five day free trail to see if you like. They have a monthly payment option also.
