Annual Lower Mainland “Not Back to School” Picnic

Queens Park, New Westminster

Tuesday Sept 6th 2011

* Location: Queens Park, New Westminster – meet at the covered
picnic area near the children’s playground – LOOK FOR THE hs-ca QUILT

* When: 11-ish a.m. The first day of school, which is September 6th this year.

* Bring:
- food for your family,
- sun screen,
- rain gear,
- well labelled park toys,
- musical instruments,
- enthusiasm,
- willingness to meet new homeschoolers,
- anything else you can think of.

* Directions: Queen’s park is located near the Arenex Complex in
New West and is easy to find from Vancouver, Surrey/Langley and most
places in the Lower Mainland. If coming from Surrey, take the Patullo
Bridge and just go straight (McBride). You will see the park on your
left. From Vancouver, take Canada Way to 10th Avenue in New West, turn left
at the highschool and follow 10th around to McBride. The park will be on
your right.

This is a very casual event. People start gathering around 11
and stay until they feel like going home. It can be very reassuring,
especially for first-time homelearners, to have something special to
do when all the neighbourhood kids troop back to school. If you are a new
homeschooler, come out and meet some experienced folks. If you have been
at this for awhile, come and share your experience with a newbie. Last
year we made masking tape name tags and indicated a new homeschooler
with a colour-coded N so that the rest of us would make a point of
welcoming the new folks.

We meet under one of the willow trees in the big grassy area right off 4th Ave. Buses stop just by the park.

Burrardview Drop-in on WEDNESDAYS this fall

Homlearners Group Family Camping

Cultus Lake Provincial Park

Monday Aug 22 to Thursday Aug 25

There is still room if you would like to join us! Here are the details of the camping trip:
There is space for 44 campers, and we have about 20 spots filled.
We’ve found secure parking in town and my husband will shuttle so if you want to join us etc…
People can unload their gear, park in town, and hitch a ride back with my husband (or stroll).

There are three people looking for car-pooling options.
We will camp from Monday, August 22 to Thursday, August 25th.
It is a group site, so we will all camp together and share a fire pit and 6 or 8 picnic tables.

The cost will be dependant upon the number of campers, and will be divided evenly per head.
Everyone will bring food for their own family. There is no agenda; no organized
activities or anything like that, just playing on the beach, and having fun together around the fire.

Park Days at Trout Lake (John Hendry Park, Vancouver)

Summer Thursday’s from Noon till.. whenever

A plan for Thursday Park Days at Trout Lake are being made for July and Aug. Weather Permitting of course.. last minute day chances might happen if the weather looks like it might be better another day. Join HS-Van to keep informed.

We are going to Trout Lake and hanging out in the usual spot (the South Side of the Park near the playground and beach under the Big Willow tree). Why don’t you come join us!

Some of us plan to be there after noon. Anyone else want to come? Bring what you want.. snacks, blankets, chairs, soccer balls, board games, sand toys, whatever makes your kids happy at the park…

Latelier Exploration

L’Atelier is an exploration studio inspired by the ReggioEmilia approach to early childhood education, which encourages young children and their teachers to explore, question, and discover in a stimulating environment. Children express interests and ideas, research for further information, reflect on the experience and form conclusions. Through this process, children develop confidence and independence with encouragement from parents, teachers and community members.

One of the primary innovations of the Reggio Emilia approach is the “atelier,~ the school studio and laboratory which was conceived as an art workshop for children. The word atelier, which derives from the French language, means work room or artist studio. Historically ateliers served not only as a place where seamstresses, carpenters, painters, sculptors and other artists could create their artwork, but also as a place where people could spend time thinking and getting inspired.

L’Atelier is a place for exploration and experimentation with the “hundred languages” available to children. Children are seen as curious, capable, and competent beings. At L’Atelier we listen to children’s ideas and theories and provide provocations that will further deepen their thinking by documenting and revisiting children’s experiences with them. At the end of each course, families will receive this documentation which will be filled with images, children’s words and the children’s creations

The Young Play Learners Weekly Drop-In

A group for young home and play based learners around the ages of 0-5 years old. We are located in the Greater Vancouver Area and meet once a week for play and support.

LOCATION: Creekside Community Centre

DAY: Thursdays

TIME: 10am-12 noon

COST: Free

The room is just to the right of the admin desk when you come in the main doors. You can phone ahead to register or just come by and sign up as a drop-in. It’s totally free of charge.

Planned Activities:

Thursday, January 6th.:This week’s meetup will be hosted by Teresa from Attachment Parenting International’s Vancouver chapter, and the topic is Sibling Issues.

Thursday, January 13th.: playlearning with wool and yarn.

We are still looking for people to volunteer to bring an activity, story, themed exploration or craft for the weeks in February and March.

We also have some storage space to keep toys and craft materials in, so if you’ve got some spare please bring them along and we can store them away and bring them out each week.

Jan 13 – Wool & Spinning demo

20 – Paper folding

27 – Storytime

Feb 3 – Attachment Parenting International

10 – Flute demo

The API meetings are the first Thursday of every month, the other three weeks of the month will have a craft, activity or demo for the kids.

Body Science Workshop for Home Learners’ (8 to 12 year olds)

Hello Everyone,

I’ve organised a 60 minute sexual health workshop for home learners’ age 8 to 12 years old. Dr. Brandy Wiebe, the facilitator, is a Saleema Noon Sexual Health Educator. More information on Saleema Noon and her team is available at http://www.saleemanoon.com/.

This workshop will cover topics from basic anatomy to the physical and emotional changes of puberty – see the attached workshop outline. Brandy will be covering all the topics listed on the outline for Grade 4-5 .

Date: Wednesday February 9th, 2011

Time: 12:45 pm

Location: The same location as the Burrardview Drop-in: St. James Hospice Community Room (2600 Wall Street, Vancouver)

Cost: $20 per Student

Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend. The venue is not large; please make other arrangements for younger siblings. (If you feel that the discussion is age-appropriate / relevant for a younger child you’re welcome to sign them up at your own discretion).
